Another teaser from Toyota seems to suggest (via the type of event setup for the reveal) that the idea of a Toyota Raptor might not be too far off. I still think its going to be mostly cosmetic with a slight increase in suspension tuning...but I hope Im proven wrong and they are going all in.

Unlike most, I like the 4runner. In SR5 trim it's a mean looking SUV and if they sold one with a V8, I bet sales would be pretty well.

well, given that they sold one with a v8 and it sold like crap...they were right to drop it as an option.

The engine choices are really the only thing that I don't like about this generation 4runner. I mean, the V6 isn't that slow but a V8 would just be perfect in that SUV. Never understood why they dropped the V8..... The v6 doesn't even have a big fuel economy increase. What genius said "we should drop the V8 because it's selling too well"?

if its not selling...why keep it? To be fair, the 2uz-fe made 271 hp and 315 ft-lbs in its best form, the 1GR-FE in the new one makes 270 hp 280 ft-lbs, weighs a lot less, and is more fuel efficient. IF you need more, there is a TRD supercharger for it that puts you in the 350/350 hp/ft-lbs range if you need. The V8 was a great engine, and I love it, but its not really needed in the 4runner.

I really give toyota props for staying on top of TRD aftermarket parts. I guess it's because I haven't spent any time DD'ing an SUV, but the few times I've driven my friends 4runner I wanted a little more speed, but to be fair it's off-road prepped and it was filled with camping gear. I feel like the V8 option would be really lusted after by those who lift and off-road their 4runners.
To save money, I feel like Toyota is going to make this raptor fighter come standard with the TRD supercharger and the V6. Maybe an exhaust to make it sound the part. It would be a pretty sweet ride, I wouldn't mind it as a family vehicle/fun off-roader.

I have a friend with an 08 4runner with the v8 and compared with my other friends 12 Tacoma with the v6 I can tell you there isn't enough of a difference to shout about. Yes the V8 is quicker and gruntier...but not a ton. What year is your friends 4runner? They changed the engine to update it with more power a while back.

He's got a 2010. It's a nice SUV, I wouldn't mind one. The 4.0 V6 does a nice job powering it, but most people are seeing mid to upper teens in the mpg department. A small V8 could give much better performance without working as hard as the v6 and returning similar or maybe even better mileage.
Slightly off topic, but if they sold one with a Diesel that would be a really good economical family vehicle.

just FYI, the V8 does 1 mpg worse city/hwy than the V6. Mid to upper teens is GREAT for what you are getting. the highlander only gets upper teens with its smaller V6 and lighter chassis. I haven't gotten above 15 in my 4.5 liter I6 toyota. a newer v8 would give you the same drop in mileage (increased valvetrain/piston friction, pumping losses and blowby)
MY friend is getting 16 city and 18 highway with his v8, 14/17 in the winter.

Wow was I wrong haha.. But if the 4runner was really going to have a model that would fight a raptor, I bet the last thing the guys at Toyota thought about was fuel economy... It's not hard to do better than a raptor haha!

I asked my uncle about it (he works for Toyota) and he tells me trd is an entirely separate company. They wont change the core basics of any toyota vehicle, but they are more like an aftermarket parts supplier. There may be a trd supercharger on them, and some trd exhuast or suspension, but they wont change the core engineering of the vehicle. In a recent interview with a toyota engineer in regards to the new 4runner the question was asked about a v8, he said its off the table entirely. Too little demand to justify the costs. People really like their v8 4runners, but it was a short footnote in the trucks history is all.

Ah well no point in complaining about the lack of V8 now haha. A supercharged 4runner with a trd exhaust and a good suspension would be an awesome rig. If I needed an SUV I'd buy one. I wonder how reliable it would be though with the FI.

The trd kit is low pressure and comes with a factory warentee, its pretty solid. I know of people who have 300,000 miles on supercharged 1fzfe engines.

Wow! That's pretty reassuring.
